  • T4 Parameter Passing: Backpedalling On the Driver Code: am looking at the requirements for building a custom tool in Visual Studio, particularly how the custom tool finds out about the details of the code generation task. There are some details about creating and registering a COM object to make it visible to Visual Studio but I will defer those to later. The custom tool must implement the IVsSingleFileG enerator interface. This interface has two methods, one to define the default extension and one to perform the code generation.
  • T4 Parameter Passing: Locating the Input Files: As I suspected, the interface to the custom tool only provides the path to the template. That means the custom tool is going to have to locate the control file and the model file as well as any other inputs by itself. Since the only clue that the custom tools it is going to have is the path to the template, that means that the template is going to have to be stored in some well-known relationship to the template file. That almost certainly is going to have to be within the application solution structure.
  • T4 Parameter Passing: Design Musings: ust so that we keep in mind what we are trying to do, let me repeat the statement of objectives. We want to be able to re-use our templates, either in different modes within the development of a single application or across multiple applications. What that means is that we want the key values that control how the templates works to be passed to the template as parameters. These are the items that should be parameterized
  • T4 Parameter Passing: Alternatives: I have had a bit of time to think on this. It seems to me that I have the following alternatives
