Ozone (O3) Defined
(1) A strong-smelling, pale blue, reactive toxic chemical gas consisting of three oxygen atoms. It is a highly reactive but unstable oxidant, used for disinfection, oxidation, or odor control in wastewater processes as well as water treatment processes. It is a product of the photochemical process involving sun's energy. Ozone exists in the upper atmosphere zone layer as well as at the earth's surface. Ozone at the earth's surface causes numerous adverse health effects and is a major component of smog.
