- Soil persistence of herbicides: This section covers studies on the persistence of several herbicides ("weed killers") in different soils. The decomposition of active substances is largely an oxidation process. Consequently, most herbicides decompose more rapidly in light, highly aerated soils. Heavy, waterlogged soils are more prone to slow decomposition of these active substances which can lead to increased residue levels in current crops and may even injure subsequently planted crops.
