Sanitation > Estuary
The following information is about Estuary.
Estuary Defined
Regions of interaction between rivers and nearshore ocean waters, where tidal action and river flow create a mixing of fresh and salt water. These areas may include bays, mouths of rivers, salt marshes, and lagoons. These brackish water ecosystems shelter and feed marine life, birds, and wildlife.

- USGS California Water Science Center Projects: San Francisco Bay Hydrodynamics: This project conducts studies that specifically assess the influence the water projects have on flow patterns in the Delta. This project not only investigates the influence that reservoir releases, gate operations, barrier placements, and exports have on the Delta, but also places these changes in the context of natural modes of variability such as the tides, unregulated river flows, and meteorological influences.
- San Francisco Bay and Delta Watershed and Estuary Modeling: As part of the CASCaDE project (Computational Assessments of Scenarios of Change for the Delta Ecosystem), we are adapting and developing hydrologic, hydrodynamic, and biological models of the Bay-Delta watershed and Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. These represent only 2 of 7 modeling components (from climate to clams and fish) that will be linked with the goal of forecasting future states of the Delta ecosystem under prescribed scenarios of change induced by factors such as global warming, water and ecosystem management, land use, and earthquakes.
