(1) The process by which metabolic activities of bacteria and other microorganisms break down complex organic materials into simple, more stable substances. Self-purification of polluted streams, sludge digestion and all the so-called secondary wastewater treatment depend on this process. (2) Process involving living organisms and their life activities. Also called biochemical process.
